Responding to a Global Pandemic

14 April 2020

On March 30, 2020, Newsy posted the story “Fauci Says 100,000 To 200,000 In U.S. May Die From Coronavirus.” This Newsy video echoed a claim made by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is also in charge of the United States coronavirus task force appointed by President Donald Trump.

This video story represents the starting point of my Story 4, which will address the response of the United States—government and population—to the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country. Today, 121,897 individuals have died globally, out of 1,945,055 confirmed cases of Covid-19, for a 6.2 percent. The United States reports 23,709 deaths out of 584,073 confirmed cases, for a 4.1 death rate. Reversing the math, using the latter rate and the estimated number of deaths claimed by Dr. Fauci, approximately 4,878,048 individuals in the United States will be infected with the novel coronavirus.

In my story, I will compare this tentative numbers with those of China, Italy and Spain, countries that have been greatly affected by the pandemic. In addition to the numerical comparison, I will calculate how much those numbers represent according to the population of each nation, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the response to the virus undertook by the American government and population.

  1. Hey there! I thik this articl was extremely informative and I liked the fact that you included numbers. This makes the story al the more real and I have to say, when I read the number of projected people that wll be infected, I felt my eyes get super wide. It’s a scary time we’re living in but the best thing we can do is be transparent with one another and not try to hide anything.

  2. Darian,

With Covid-19 being such a hot topic it’s no surprise that I had chose something similar. You break down what Fauci had said very well and the plans on what you’re writing about are clear. It’s a good idea to use actual figures from other countries to give an accurate picture of what we have to expect.

  3. Hello Darian, This was a great story to read and I found all of your numbers of Covid cases to be alarming yet informative due to the seriousness to it. I’m glad we are in a better position now with vaccines being pushed out all over the country.
